The Holoenzyme initiates RNA synthesis fromsigma 70 specific bacterial and phage promoters.E. coli RNA Polymerase, Core Enzyme consistsof 5 subunits designated α, α, β´, β, and ω.The enzyme is free of sigma factor and doesnot recognize any specific bacterial or phageDNA promoters. The enzyme retains the abilityto transcribe RNA from nonspecific initiationsequences. Addition of sigma factors will allowthe enzyme to initiate RNA synthesis from specificbacterial and phage promoters. The core enzyme hasa molecular weight of approximately 400 kDa.
