ProductBackground:Sphingomyelinasescatalyzesthehydrolysisofsphingomyelinintoceramideandphosphorylcholine;andisinvolvedinprogrammedcelldeath(apoptosis),celldifferentiationandcellproliferation.Sphingomyelinasesareclassifiedintofivecategories:acidsphingomyelinase(aSMase),secretorysphingomyelinase(sSMase),neutralMg2+/-dependentsphingomyelinases(nSMase),neutralMg2+/-independentsphingomyelinasesandalkalinesphingomyelinase.Acidsphingomyelinasewasthefirstdescribedandbestcharacterizedofthesphingomyelinases.Adeficiencyoflysosomalacidsphingomyelinaseleadstorapidneurodegenerationanddeathduetoexcessiveaccumulationofsphingomyelin(Niemann-Pickdisease). TheEchelonAcidSphingomyelinaseAssayKitusesafluorogenicsubstratespecificforacidsphingomyelinasetoprovideasensitiveandhomogenousmethodtomeasuretheactivityofaSMaseinvitro.Thekitprovidesallnecessaryreagentstomeasuretheacidsphingomyelinaseactivityof40samplesraninduplicate.
