Ent-POPC
3-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-1-phosphocholine
Ent-POPC/Ent-3-Palmitoyl-2-Oleoyl-sn-Glycero-1-Phosphocholine is an enantiomer of the phospholipid POPC/3-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-1-phosphocholine.
Enantiomers are also called optical isomers, antipodes, or optical antipodes. They are stereoisomers that are mirror images of each other, and thus can’t be overlaid. Enantiomers have the same connectivity but opposite spatial orientation. Having identical empirical formulas but different three-dimensional structures, they can be distinguished in their ability to rotate plane-polarized light (+/−) by equal amounts but in opposite directions.
POPC is more specifically a phosphatidylcholine (PC). Phosphatidylcholines are a group of phospholipids, with choline as a major group. They are naturally present in the membranes of eukaryotic cells and are absent in most bacterial cell membranes.
POPC is an important phospholipid for experimental biophysical projects based on studying various lipid subjects such as lipid rafts, or synthetic systems like nanodiscs.
Ent-POPC is intended for use in further analyses of POPC roles and abilities.
