Murideoxycholic acid
5ß-cholanic acid-3α,6ß-diol
Murideoxycholic acid (MDCA/muricholic acid/murideoxycholate) belongs to a group of secondary bile acids (BAs). It is found as one of the major forms in mice and is present in low concentrations in humans.
It is a 3α-hydroxy steroid that has hydroxyl groups at positions 3α and 6β. The compound is produced from α-muricholic acid and β-muricholic acid. The enzymes that catalyze the hydroxylation reactions, forming muricholates in mice, are the cytochrome P450 CYP2c70 enzymes.
MDCA is proven to prevent gallstone formation in hamsters on a lithogenic diet. Yet, it doesn’t resolve gallstones in dogs on a high cholesterol diet.
In humans, MDCA is absorbed and metabolized rapidly as an endogenous BA with an approximately 3.5 days half-life.
