Amylin (1-37), human, also known as Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) is the primary component of amyloid deposits found in pancreatic B-cells of patients with type two diabetes mellitus. Amyloid deposition contributes to the pathology of a variety of disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, chronic renal dialysis, senile cardiac amyloidosis and type two diabetes mellitus. Amyloid has been proposed to modulate glucose metabolism in conjunction with insulin, but in patients with type two diabetes mellitus, amylin aggregates to form amyloid.
