Carbenicillin is a third-generation analog of penicillin. Likepenicillin, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis bypreventing peptidoglycan cross-linking and murein assembly. Itshows greater efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria as comparedto penicillin. It may be useful against some species ofPseudomonas and Serratia, but has not been generally used inmammalian cell cultures. However, plant cell culturists havefound this to be a useful prophylactic agent against manyorganisms, such as Agrobacterium. Recommended concentration incell culture is 100 mg/L.
