Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic isolated fromStreptomyces rimosus. It targets a variety of gram-negative andgram-positive bacteria as well as several protozoan species. Itdisplays activity similar to that of neomycin.
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are composed of amino groups attachedto glycosides. They bind the 30s ribosomal subunit, causingmisreading of the mRNA sequence and inhibition of translocation.Consequently, protein synthesis is inhibited.
Paromomycin sulfate is freely soluble.
