Calcitonin is cyclic peptide hormone that stimulates bone formation by osteoblasts and inhibits bone resorption. Calcitonin is a hypocalcemic hormone produced by the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid or by the ultimobranchial bodies of non-mammalian vertebrates. It decreases blood calcium and phosphate due to inhibition of resorption by osteoblasts and osteocytes. Calcitonin, salmon [Des-Tyr22] is an analogue of calcitonin with reduced adenylate cyclase activation activity (in vitro). In isolated rat pituitary cells, it exhibits lowered inhibitory activity for prolactin release.
