Bonemorphogeneticprotein2(BMP-2)isamemberofthebonemorphogeneticproteinfamily,whichispartoftheTGF-βsuperfamily.TogetherwithBMP-7,BMP-2isapotentstimulatorofosteoblastdifferentiationaswellasofchondrocyteproliferationofmesenchymalcellsduringboneandcartilageformation,andcanalsoinducecardiacandepithelialmorphogenesis.BMP-2issecretedbyseveralcelltissuessuchasspleen,lung,liver,brain,smallintestine,prostate,andovary,asimmaturelongform,andafterproteolyticcleavageitmaturesintoanactivedisulfide-linkedhomodimer.BMP-2signalsthroughheterodimericreceptors,suchasBMPR1A,andactivatesTGF-βsignalingcascadeandthehedgehogpathway.Besidesthemorphogenicrole,BMP-2isalsocrucialduringembryonicdorsal-ventralgenerationandorganogenesis.RecombinantBMP-2isunderclinicalinvestigationfortreatmentofbonedegenerationdiseases,spinalinjuries,andorthodonticpathologies.MaturehumanmouseandratBMP-2sharefullaminoacidsequenceidentity.RecombinantHumanBMP-2correspondstothematureformofBMP-2.
