KIRscanbefoundonnaturalkiller(NK)cellswhichplayanimportantroleintheinnateimmuneresponse.NKcellshavebeenimplicatedinthesuppressionofgraft-versus-hostdisease,promotionofbonemarrowengraftment,andmediationofagraft-versus-leukemiaeffect.KIRsexistinvariousisoforms.TheinhibitoryKIRsinteractwithspecificHLAclassImolecules,predominantlyHLA-C,ontargetcells.
NotallKIRgenesarepresentineveryhumanindividual.Furtherheterogeneityexistsatthetranscriptionallevel.DifferentsubsetsofNKcellsexpressdifferentKIRs,evenwithinoneindividual.
