Galectin-1 belongs to a large family of carbohydrate-bindingproteins called lectins. Galectin-1can be either monomeric orhomodimeric and is found in a wide variety of cells and tissuetypes. Galectin-1 can control cell growth, proliferation, induceapoptosis of activated T cells while it can also modulatecytokine secretion or inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokineproduction. Galectin-1 plays an important role in acute andchronic inflammation. Recombinant human Glaectin-1 is anon-glycosylated protein comprised of 134 amino acids, with amolecular weight of 14.5 kDa.
