Penicillin:streptomycin (pen:strep) solution is a standardantibiotic mixture used against a wide variety of Gram-positiveand Gram-negative bacterial organisms. It has no activity againstfungi. This product is useful both as a preventive agent and as atreatment for bacterially contaminated cultures. However,organisms resistant to one or both antibiotics are becoming morecommon in cell culture laboratories. Investigators need to bealert to this possibility and consider other antibiotics.Thissolution is supplied in a 100x concentration to make dispensinginto liquid medium more convenient.
